The Bushcraft Challenge Information

The Bushcraft Challenge

The Bushcraft Challenge is a great way to for your students to learn new skills working both in groups and individually. The Bushcraft Challenge consists of a range of different stations from the selection below and the students are able to participate in all of the different activities selected throughout the day (exact activity stations for your event to be discussed with our activities team).

The activities are designed to encourage the students to engage hands-on with nature as they experience ways to provide for their team without the use of modern technology.

All of our Bushcraft activities are age and skill structured, so if your students are complete beginners or  you have students who have done some before, then our instructors are able to show and teach the basics through to more advanced skills.

Activity Area

WiseUp Team Building can run events at any privately owned site. This includes school/college/university grounds, sports facilities, camp sites etc. We are not able to run events in public spaces such as parks/rec grounds.

For a day of The Bushcraft Challenge, the ideal space is usually a school field, astro turf, MUGA or other outside area roughly the size of a football pitch. For larger groups, more space may be required while groups with less students can be accommodated on a space the size of a netball court.

Your WiseUp Team

On the day of your event, a team of WiseUp instructors, led by one of our experienced Lead Instructors, will arrive around an hour before the scheduled start time. They will bring with them everything needed for your activity day in one of our WiseUp vans.

The team will set up the activities in your designated activity area and await the arrival of your students to let them know where to go.

Our staff will remain at their activity stations while the students rotate between them. WiseUp staff will also run icebreakers and other group challenges throughout the day as needed.

After the day has concluded and the students have left the activity area, your WiseUp team will pack away all of our equipment, leaving the space exactly as we found it before departing.

Bushcraft Activities for Year 1 & Year 22

How would the day run?

The day would begin with a short digital presentation on the basic rules of survival, why and where the skills are useful and the importance of teams working together to use their existing skills in the activities which they will be participating. The students will be split into teams of 10-12 and they would then visit each station in turn at allocated times throughout the day. The activities allow students to appreciate the different abilities of their team members and are encouraged to draw on any existing knowledge they have in relation to the task at hand.

All of our sessions are designed to be as active as possible, with students running, building, crafting and cooking. Each activity has different levels to ensure that students of different ages have their session tailored to them, meaning that even if students took part in the same session over a couple of years, the content would be different.

The Bushcraft Challenge day will be rounded off with a debrief about how the skills they have learnt can be transferred into other areas of their lives and the students will take home any completed craft they have made during the day.

The Activities involved

A standard day of The Bushcraft Challenge includes 3 activities, with each session lasting a minimum of 1.5 hours. If time allows, schools may request a fourth session for an additional charge. Please discuss this with our team.

The standard activities for a day of The Bushcraft Challenge for Primary age students will generally be Fire Lighting, Shelter Building and Water Purification, although these may be subject to change.

The standard activities for a day of The Bushcraft Challenge for Secondary age students will generally be Fire Lighting, Shelter Building and Stretcher Building, although these may be subject to change.

Staffing

For The Bushcraft Challenge we ask that there is 1 member of school staff to every 24 students. The bushcraft stations are run by our instructors while school staff are there to observe and supervise the students.

All of our days can be altered to include your specific aims and objectives for your students and this would be discussed with our activities team prior to your event. A lot of schools we work with incorporate a Bushcraft day as part of a larger project, linking the sessions with many different subjects, from Geography to Maths.
