Apprentice Themed Day Information

Apprentice Themed Day

Our Apprentice Themed Days require students to use the various skills of people in their teams, from the serious logical thinkers through to those with a more artistic flair to complete this multi-layered challenge. Time management and delegation are absolutely key in order for teams to succeed, standing out from their competitors in order to impress our Lead WiseUp Boss.

Great for Older students

WiseUp’s Apprentice Themed Days are well suited to older students, giving them the freedom to manage their own time, funds and team members, with links to curriculum subjects including business studies, art and maths. Participants additionally practise valuable workplace skills, such as public presentation and answering questions under pressure, whilst learning to maximise their team’s potential.

Activity Area

WiseUp Team Building can run events at any privately owned site. This includes school/college/university grounds, sports facilities, camp sites etc. We are not able to run events in public spaces such as parks/rec grounds.

For our Apprentice Themed Days, the ideal outdoor space is usually a school field, astro turf, MUGA or other outside area roughly the size of a football pitch. For larger groups, more space will be required while groups with less students can be accommodated on a space the size of a netball court.

We are also able to run indoors in sports halls, gyms and other large, clear spaces.

If you would like students to utilise multi-media for their presentations, then a room with these facilities would be needed.

Your WiseUp Team

On the day of your event, a team of WiseUp instructors, led by one of our experienced Lead Instructors, will arrive around an hour before the scheduled start time. They will bring with them everything needed for your activity day in one of our WiseUp vans.

The team will set up the activities in your designated activity area and await the arrival of your students to let them know where to go.

While students are on the activities, our staff will circulate between the groups providing input and support to the students and group supervisors. They will also run icebreakers and other group challenges throughout the day.

After the day has concluded and the students have left the activity area, your WiseUp team will pack away all of our equipment, leaving the space exactly as we found it before departing.

How would the day run?

The day begins with a short presentation which explains to the students how the day will run and how it all links into school and life outside school. The brief will outline a budget allocated to the team, resources available, time limits and any regulations/restrictions. The students are split into groups of 10-12 (if this is arranged prior to our arrival then it saves time on the day) and given their project folder, containing information, price lists and their funds for the challenge.

Teams will then need to work together to design, budget for and create a product, allocating resources and conducting thorough testing to ensure it all works robustly. Additionally, they will need to create a detailed multi-platform advertising campaign and slick sales presentation, all whilst keeping close track of their finances.

Half of the teams will then present to the WiseUp team, as well as their school supervisors and several other teams and will be scored on various elements including the presentation, advert, value for money, finances and product itself. The other half of the groups will be outside testing their products across a range of criteria with other members of the WiseUp team. They will then swap so that all teams have the chance to present and test.
Once all the results are collated, the WiseUp team (with input from school supervisors if they wish) will select the winning team for the day, basing the decision across all factors. A de-brief will be given to all teams, giving feedback on the day and linking to the beginning presentation, as well as relating the day to future projects and situations students will be able to use the skills in. The winning team will then be announced and congratulated (some schools choose to provide prizes which can be given out).

Staffing

For our regular Secondary Apprentice Themed days, we  ask that each team of 10-12 students is allocated a teacher, ta or adult helper to supervise the team for the duration of the day. This is due to our activities being designed for and risk assessed based on a maximum of 12 students per group. Our insurance cover is based off our risk assessments so it is important that these ratios are kept.

We understand that staffing within schools can often be tight and for this reason, a lot of schools we visit ask 6th form sports leaders or prefects to take on the supervisory role of the younger student teams.

For 6th Form groups we do not require each team to have a staff member, however we do ask that the school matches our ratio of 1 member of staff to 30 students.

We will provide a member of WiseUp staff for every 30 students you have booked for.
