The Hub Challenge Information

The Hub Challenge

The Hub Challenge incorporates over 30 different team building and problem solving tasks which the students tackle in groups, in a round robin style activity day. Some of the tasks are more physical, whilst others are more logical, which allows the different strengths of the members of the team to shine. Designed to inspire the students to plan, communicate, work together and motivate themselves and others throughout the day, the tasks encourage groups to self-reflect at regular intervals.

Activity Area

WiseUp Team Building can run events at any privately owned site. This includes school/college/university grounds, sports facilities, camp sites etc. We are not able to run events in public spaces such as parks/rec grounds.

For a day of The Hub Challenge, the ideal space is usually a school field, astro turf, MUGA or other outside area roughly the size of a football pitch. For larger groups, more space will be required while groups with less students can be accommodated on a space the size of a netball court.

We are also able to run indoors in sports halls, gyms and other large, clear spaces.

Your WiseUp Team

On the day of your event, a team of WiseUp instructors, led by one of our experienced Lead Instructors, will arrive around an hour before the scheduled start time. They will bring with them everything needed for your activity day in one of our WiseUp vans.

The team will set up the activities in your designated activity area and await the arrival of your students to let them know where to go.

While students are on the activities, our staff will circulate between the groups providing input and support to the students and group supervisors. They will also run icebreakers and other group challenges throughout the day.

After the day has concluded and the students have left the activity area, your WiseUp team will pack away all of our equipment, leaving the space exactly as we found it before departing.

How would the day run?

The day will start with a short presentation to the students about the importance of teamwork in everyday life and how to develop new skills alongside expanding on their existing knowledge. The students will be split into teams of 10-12 (pre-arranged and organised by your school’s event lead teacher) and each team will be allocated a teacher/ta or adult whose role will be to supervise the students throughout the day and score the team on the different activities.

The teams will try and complete as many challenges as possible throughout the day and after each task the students will be scored on:

  • Planning
  • Communication
  • Working together
  • Motivation
  • Completing the task

There are no time limits on the activities, with the emphasis being on how well teams have completed each challenge. The day is very student led, with team members taking turns to select challenges and being strongly encouraged to score their own performance while the group supervisor acts more as a moderator.

Icebreakers, re-energising activities and all-in team mega challenges are often incorporated into The Hub Challenge days, depending on the needs of the group.

The day will be rounded up with a debrief to all students in which the WiseUp team will feedback about how the groups got on throughout the day and relate back to the initial presentation before revealing the final scores.

All of our days can be tailored to include your specific aims and objectives for your students, and this would be discussed with our activities team prior to your event.

Staffing

For our regular Primary and Secondary Hub Challenge days, we ask that each team of 10-12 students is allocated a teacher, ta or adult helper to supervise the team for the duration of the day. This is due to our activities being designed for and risk assessed based on a maximum of 12 students per group. Our insurance cover is based off our risk assessments so it is important that these ratios are kept.

We understand that staffing within schools can often be tight and for this reason, a lot of schools we visit ask 6th form sports leaders or prefects to take on the supervisory role of the younger student teams.

For 6th Form groups we do not require each team to have a staff member, however we do ask that the school matches our ratio of 1 member of staff to 30 students.

We will provide a member of WiseUp staff for every 30 students you have booked for.
