With the end of term break nearly upon us, one of the most commonly asked questions seems to be “What are you doing over the holidays?” The WiseUp team has heard lots of different answers to this question, from late season ski trips to family breaks at the seaside. As the weather starts to (slowly) warm up, we thought we would share about something that we will be doing over the next couple of weeks: Going camping!
Why would anyone want to go camping?
This is a great question, and while we could be here all day explaining, here are 5 fantastic reasons to go camping:
- Physical Health – Getting out into the fresh air (and hopefully sunshine) is so good for us all. We tend to move around a lot more when we are camping too. Not to mention the time away from screens gives our eyes a rest.
- Mental Health – Talking about screens, taking some time away from our computers, phones and tablets can also do wonders for our mental health. Enjoy the opportunity to “unplug” for a few days and don’t worry about checking social media every 10 minutes.
- Connection with people – Camping with friends and family is such a wonderful way to spend time with those we love. Working together to complete camp chores such as collecting water or cooking a meal can give us the time to connect in a way that we might usually be too busy for.
- Exploring new places – Camping is something that can be experienced in so many different places. From the local woodland down the road to mountainsides, inner city camp sites to beachside spots, you are never short of places to go.
- Experiencing nature – Sleeping out under the stars, beneath a canopy of trees, on a soft bed of grass, surrounded by fragrant flowers and plants…does it really get any better than that?!

It’s a brilliant inexpensive holiday option
Holidays can be ridiculously expensive! Given the current financial climate especially, every penny counts and the great thing about camping is that it doesn’t cost a lot. Once you have all the bits, it barely costs anything at all. Even large families can enjoy a camping trip together without the need to fork out hundreds or even thousands of pounds.
If you’re feeling really adventurous, you don’t even need to both with the tent. You could always bivi out, sleep in a hammock or make a DIY shelter (please make sure it’s 100% if you’re going to try this one out!) Trying these out in a garden space makes for a memorable experience in itself – no need to even venture off!
