7 Children’s Books that feature Team Work

Here at WiseUp Team Building, we love World Book Day! Children’s books that feature team work are a fantastic way to show children the different ways of working together. Reading also helps children relax and lets their imagination take over, which is something that transfers across to Outdoor Play.

These are 7 of our favourite Children’s Books that feature Team Work:

  1. The Duck in the Truck – Jez Alborough
  2. Winnie-The-Pooh – A.A.Milne
  3. Charlotte’s Web – E.B.White
  4. The Sheep-Pig – Dick King-Smith
  5. The Famous Five – Enid Blyton
  6. The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
  7. Harry Potter – J.K.Rowling

1. The Duck in the Truck: Jez Alborough

This story is great for highlighting that when lots of people pull together with the same aim, they can achieve whatever they set their mind to. It does not matter if they are complete strangers, they can still work as a team!

2. Winnie-The-Pooh: A.A.Milne

This classic collection of short stories has Pooh Bear and his friends working together to solve a number of different problems. They also help to get Pooh out of a few sticky situations, which he gets into thanks to his love of “hunny.” One of our favourite stories is the one In Which Eeyore Loses a Tail and Pooh Finds One. The residents of the Hundred Acre Wood come up with a fun way together of trying to find their friend’s lot tail. This shows that problem solving can be fun, while also rewarding!

3. Charlotte’s Web: E.B.White

This book is a firm childhood favourite, with a well-thumbed copy still in pride of place on our bookshelf. After learning that Wilbur the pig’s days are numbered, Charlotte the spider literally weaves a plan to save her friend. With the help of the other barn animals, Charlotte convinces not just the farmer, but people far and wide that Wilbur is “Some Pig,” which ultimately saves his bacon!

4. The Sheep-Pig: Dick King-Smith

Another story with a pig as the protagonist, this book features a heart warming tale that proves to all of us not to believe everything we hear. Babe the pig is an unexpected win for Farmer Hogget, a sheep farmer by trade. With no real use for a pig, his wife plans to fatten Babe up for Christmas dinner. While he is young, Babe is told that sheep are stupid and lazy, yet when he actually meets one for real, he learns this is not true. It is working together with the sheep in fact that saves Babes life, and changes the opinions of sheep of not just one little pig, but the whole farm.

5. The Famous Five: Enid Blyton

Not just a single book, but a fun series of 21 tales of mystery and adventure. Brothers Julian and Dick, along with their sister Anne, cousin George (who’s real name is Georgina, but refuses to answer to it as she has always wanted to be a boy) and George’s dog Timmy spend their school holidays together. They always seem to end up in the middle of an adventure, whether it is while camping out on the moors, or staying at George’s house, Kirrin Cottage. Many of their adventures lead to some or all of the children getting into various scrapes, sometimes with friends they have made along the way, yet they always manage to come up with a plan together and save the day. These books are wholesome and exciting at the same time, and really show how people of different ages and backgrounds can work as a team to achieve their outcome.

6. The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins

The first in a series of 3 books, The Hunger Games is one for older children (although the adults here at WiseUp love it too!) The book is set in the fictional country of Panem, sometime in the future. The Capitol city is ringed with Districts which provide all the services for the country, and whose inhabitants live in poverty. As punishment for a previous uprising against the Capitol, children from the Districts are put into an arena each year and forced to fight to the death as Tributes. The book features many examples of team work in the various alliances that form in the area. Not only that, but the teams of people who work together to ready the Tributes to face the media and literal onslaught, as well as look after them after the Games highlight the importance of working hard to build other people up sometimes.

7. Harry Potter: J.K.Rowling

Another series, but pick any of the 7 books and you will see why we couldn’t choose just one. The story centres around Harry Potter, a young wizard with a tragic background. In each book, Harry is faced with challenges he has to overcome, some small and others quite frankly enormous! Luckily, he is not alone. By his side through all 7 books are his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, along with a whole host of other characters. At times, these people risk their lives while working together towards the biggest aim of defeating the Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort. They support and encourage each other, while offering advice and practical help through various obstacles.
