Leadership, Time Management, Navigation & Team Work

Orienteering activities at school provide exciting outdoor adventures which involve walking or running whilst navigating around a course using a map and sometimes a compass. The aim is to move between a set of control points, finding tags at the correct locations. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.

WiseUp Team Building regularly get asked to set up orienteering courses for schools, scouts and youth groups. We offer a range of different courses from picture orienteering and portable punch orienteering to permanent fixed courses.

Orienteering in Schools across the UK

How will the day run?

After a short presentation about how the session will run, students are split into small teams and taught some basic orienteering techniques. Exactly what they are taught will depend on the age and ability of learners, and what type of course they are participating in. Teams will then be sent to find specific points around the activity area, with instructors and school supervisors stationed at various points for safety and guidance. After a set time limit, students will be gathers all together with final scores being revealed.

Some of our courses require one of our instructors to conduct an on-site pre-visit to set up. This will be discussed after booking if needed. In addition, there is the option to keep the resources developed for certain orienteering challenges, and again, this can be discussed with our team.

Why Choose WiseUp Team Building?

Here at WiseUp, we work hard to ensure that every event we run is tailored to the exact needs of each school we work with. Orienteering in particular is an activity for which we create bespoke resources. This guarantees your students and staff have a great day especially designed for them.

Behind the scenes, our Activities Team work with your school’s lead teacher to arrange the details before your event. WiseUp Team Building stick to strict instructor:participant ratios. This maintains the high quality of our activity days, whilst safeguarding student teams at the same time.

There is no limit on numbers for our Orienteering days. We are able to work with small groups of just a few students, up to whole year groups at a time. Bringing our staff to your school site keeps the costs low, and makes organising the logistics of an outdoor learning day significantly easier for school staff.

Orienteering Timings

Orienteering works very well as part of a combination activity day. In particular, tying in orienteering activities at school with The Bushcraft Challenge is great fun.

Limited on Time

On it’s own, orienteering is a fantastic half day activity. We can run morning sessions which finish at 12 o’clock midday, and afternoon sessions, starting at 12.30pm. This is ideal for groups who maybe aren’t able to have a full day out of the classroom.

Limited on Budget

For schools with a more limited budget, particularly for larger groups, a split day allows all students to take part over the course of the day. Our team of instructors would work with half of the group in the morning, followed by the other half in the afternoon. By working with less students at a time, our instructor team is smaller, which ultimately costs schools less as a result, whilst maintaining our quality standard.
